Chairside Whitening Procedure
1. Cleaning of the teeth or scaling
We perform dental scaling and polishing a few days before the whitening procedure to remove tartar and surface stains. This ensures that your gums are healthy and that there is no bleeding after heavy scaling, which can disturb the bleaching procedure.
2. Touch up cleaning
When you come for the whitening session, we do some touch up cleaning to remove plaque or new stains before starting the procedure.
3. Determining pre-bleaching shade
We use a shade guide to determine your dental shade before starting. This shade is recorded in your notes, and photos may also be taken to record the pre-bleaching shade.
4. Isolation
As bleaching agents are peroxide-based and caustic in nature, we isolate the 20 front teeth that will be whitened. We use a liquid dam, a lip and cheek retractor, a face bib, gauze and cotton roll, and tinted protective eyewear to protect your gums, lips, and skin.
5. Application of whitening agent
After all protective barriers are in place, we apply the bleaching agent on the dried tooth surface. This agent may be in gel or powder and liquid form.
6. Activation of whitening agent
Most proprietary brands of whitening agents have their protocols for activation. The most common type is the use of a source of bright light to increase the effectiveness of the bleaching agent. Some brands in the market do not need to use a bleaching light.
7. Ending of the whitening session
To wrap up the whitening session, we suction and wipe off all agents from the tooth surface. We remove all protective barriers and ask you to rinse.
After the whitening procedure, we recommend post-treatment fluoride therapy to remineralize the tooth surface and reduce sensitivity.
We also use the same shade guide to record the post-bleaching shade so that we can compare it with the pre-bleaching shade.
8. Maintaining Your Teeth Whitening Results
Finally, we advise you to choose a whitening package that comes with a home whitening maintenance kit so that you can use it whenever there is a slight relapse in shade. The whiter shade will not last forever, and it may last from 6 months to 2 years, depending on your maintenance care and diet intake. We also recommend a follow-up review and maintenance to keep your teeth white and healthy.

Who is suitable for Chairside Whitening?
Chairside whitening is suitable for most people who want to achieve a brighter, whiter smile. However, it is important to have a dental consultation to determine if chairside whitening is suitable for you. Individuals with sensitive teeth, gum disease, or dental restorations may need alternative whitening options or additional preparation before undergoing chairside whitening.
Our dental team at Spring Orchid Dental will assess your dental health and recommend the best whitening treatment option for you.
